Wildlife on the Road

Traffic, Wildlife-Vehicle Conflicts, and Roadkill were analyzed in the four maps below

Analysis: Comparing the two maps below, it is safe to assume that generally most wildlife traffic incidents occur in areas with fewer traffic and away from urbanized areas (places populated densely with highways). This is beneficial since building on areas with less disturbance on traffic flow will be less costly. There have been fewer wildlife-vehicle conflicts in urbanized areas, such as Los Angeles downtown. Data courtesy of the Road Ecology Center, UC Davis (http://roadecology.ucdavis.edu), Waetjen and Shilling (2017).

Density of Roadkill

Analysis: Areas with most roadkill (higher density) are Ventura County, San Diego County, and near the edges of Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside County. San Diego County has the highest amount of roadkill. Data courtesy of the Road Ecology Center, UC Davis (http://roadecology.ucdavis.edu), Waetjen and Shilling (2017).
